이사야 44-48

하나님 vs. 헛된 우상

제44장

1 나의 종 야곱, 내가 택한 이스라엘아 이제 들으라
2 너를 만들고 너를 모태에서부터 지어 낸 너를 도와 줄 여호와가 이같이 말하노라 나의 종 야곱, 내가 택한 여수룬아 두려워하지 말라
3 나는 목마른 자에게 물을 주며 마른 땅에 시내가 흐르게 하며 나의 영을 네 자손에게, 나의 복을 네 후손에게 부어 주리니
4 그들이 풀 가운데에서 솟아나기를 시냇가의 버들 같이 할 것이라
5 한 사람은 이르기를 나는 여호와께 속하였다 할 것이며 또 한 사람은 야곱의 이름으로 자기를 부를 것이며 또 다른 사람은 자기가 여호와께 속하였음을 그의 손으로 기록하고 이스라엘의 이름으로 존귀히 여김을 받으리라
6 이스라엘의 왕인 여호와, 이스라엘의 구원자인 만군의 여호와가 이같이 말하노라 나는 처음이요 나는 마지막이라 나 외에 다른 신이 없느니라
7 내가 영원한 백성을 세운 이후로 나처럼 외치며 알리며 나에게 설명할 자가 누구냐 있거든 될 일과 장차 올 일을 그들에게 알릴지어다
8 너희는 두려워하지 말며 겁내지 말라 내가 예로부터 너희에게 듣게 하지 아니하였느냐 알리지 아니하였느냐 너희는 나의 증인이라 나 외에 신이 있겠느냐 과연 반석은 없나니 다른 신이 있음을 내가 알지 못하노라
9 우상을 만드는 자는 다 허망하도다 그들이 원하는 것들은 무익한 것이거늘 그것들의 증인들은 보지도 못하며 알지도 못하니 그러므로 수치를 당하리라
10 신상을 만들며 무익한 우상을 부어 만든 자가 누구냐
11 보라 그와 같은 무리들이 다 수치를 당할 것이라 그 대장장이들은 사람일 뿐이라 그들이 다 모여 서서 두려워하며 함께 수치를 당할 것이니라
12 철공은 철로 연장을 만들고 숯불로 일하며 망치를 가지고 그것을 만들며 그의 힘센 팔로 그 일을 하나 배가 고프면 기운이 없고 물을 마시지 아니하면 피로하니라
13 목공은 줄을 늘여 재고 붓으로 긋고 대패로 밀고 곡선자로 그어 사람의 아름다움을 따라 사람의 모양을 만들어 집에 두게 하며
14 그는 자기를 위하여 백향목을 베며 디르사 나무와 상수리나무를 취하며 숲의 나무들 가운데에서 자기를 위하여 한 나무를 정하며 나무를 심고 비를 맞고 자라게도 하느니라
15 이 나무는 사람이 땔감을 삼는 것이거늘 그가 그것을 가지고 자기 몸을 덥게도 하고 불을 피워 떡을 굽기도 하고 신상을 만들어 경배하며 우상을 만들고 그 앞에 엎드리기도 하는구나
16 그 중의 절반은 불에 사르고 그 절반으로는 고기를 구워 먹고 배불리며 또 몸을 덥게 하여 이르기를 아하 따뜻하다 내가 불을 보았구나 하면서
17 그 나머지로 신상 곧 자기의 우상을 만들고 그 앞에 엎드려 경배하며 그것에게 기도하여 이르기를 너는 나의 신이니 나를 구원하라 하는도다
18 그들이 알지도 못하고 깨닫지도 못함은 그들의 눈이 가려서 보지 못하며 그들의 마음이 어두워져서 깨닫지 못함이니라
19 마음에 생각도 없고 지식도 없고 총명도 없으므로 내가 그것의 절반을 불 사르고 또한 그 숯불 위에서 떡도 굽고 고기도 구워 먹었거늘 내가 어찌 그 나머지로 가증한 물건을 만들겠으며 내가 어찌 그 나무 토막 앞에 굴복하리요 말하지 아니하니
20 그는 재를 먹고 허탄한 마음에 미혹되어 자기의 영혼을 구원하지 못하며 나의 오른손에 거짓 것이 있지 아니하냐 하지도 못하느니라
21 야곱아 이스라엘아 이 일을 기억하라 너는 내 종이니라 내가 너를 지었으니 너는 내 종이니라 이스라엘아 너는 나에게 잊혀지지 아니하리라
22 내가 네 허물을 빽빽한 구름 같이, 네 죄를 안개 같이 없이하였으니 너는 내게로 돌아오라 내가 너를 구속하였음이니라
23 여호와께서 이 일을 행하셨으니 하늘아 노래할지어다 땅의 깊은 곳들아 높이 부를지어다 산들아 숲과 그 가운데의 모든 나무들아 소리내어 노래할지어다 여호와께서 야곱을 구속하셨으니 이스라엘 중에 자기의 영광을 나타내실 것임이로다
24 네 구속자요 모태에서 너를 지은 나 여호와가 이같이 말하노라 나는 만물을 지은 여호와라 홀로 하늘을 폈으며 나와 함께 한 자 없이 땅을 펼쳤고
25 헛된 말을 하는 자들의 징표를 폐하며 점 치는 자들을 미치게 하며 지혜로운 자들을 물리쳐 그들의 지식을 어리석게 하며
26 그의 종의 말을 세워 주며 그의 사자들의 계획을 성취하게 하며 예루살렘에 대하여는 이르기를 거기에 사람이 살리라 하며 유다 성읍들에 대하여는 중건될 것이라 내가 그 황폐한 곳들을 복구시키리라 하며
27 깊음에 대하여는 이르기를 마르라 내가 네 강물들을 마르게 하리라 하며
28 고레스에 대하여는 이르기를 내 목자라 그가 나의 모든 기쁨을 성취하리라 하며 예루살렘에 대하여는 이르기를 중건되리라 하며 성전에 대하여는 네 기초가 놓여지리라 하는 자니라

제45장

1 여호와께서 그의 기름 부음을 받은 고레스에게 이같이 말씀하시되 내가 그의 오른손을 붙들고 그 앞에 열국을 항복하게 하며 내가 왕들의 허리를 풀어 그 앞에 문들을 열고 성문들이 닫히지 못하게 하리라
2 내가 너보다 앞서 가서 험한 곳을 평탄하게 하며 놋문을 쳐서 부수며 쇠빗장을 꺾고
3 네게 흑암 중의 보화와 은밀한 곳에 숨은 재물을 주어 네 이름을 부르는 자가 나 여호와 이스라엘의 하나님인 줄을 네가 알게 하리라
4 내가 나의 종 야곱, 내가 택한 자 이스라엘 곧 너를 위하여 네 이름을 불러 너는 나를 알지 못하였을지라도 네게 칭호를 주었노라
5 나는 여호와라 나 외에 다른 이가 없나니 나 밖에 신이 없느니라 너는 나를 알지 못하였을지라도 나는 네 띠를 동일 것이요
6 해 뜨는 곳에서든지 지는 곳에서든지 나 밖에 다른 이가 없는 줄을 알게 하리라 나는 여호와라 다른 이가 없느니라
7 나는 빛도 짓고 어둠도 창조하며 나는 평안도 짓고 환난도 창조하나니 나는 여호와라 이 모든 일들을 행하는 자니라 하였노라
8 하늘이여 위로부터 공의를 뿌리며 구름이여 의를 부을지어다 땅이여 열려서 구원을 싹트게 하고 공의도 함께 움돋게 할지어다 나 여호와가 이 일을 창조하였느니라
9 질그릇 조각 중 한 조각 같은 자가 자기를 지으신 이와 더불어 다툴진대 화 있을진저 진흙이 토기장이에게 너는 무엇을 만드느냐 또는 네가 만든 것이 그는 손이 없다 말할 수 있겠느냐
10 아버지에게는 무엇을 낳았소 하고 묻고 어머니에게는 무엇을 낳으려고 해산의 수고를 하였소 하고 묻는 자는 화 있을진저
11 이스라엘의 거룩하신 이 곧 이스라엘을 지으신 여호와께서 이같이 이르시되 너희가 장래 일을 내게 물으며 또 내 아들들과 내 손으로 한 일에 관하여 내게 명령하려느냐
12 내가 땅을 만들고 그 위에 사람을 창조하였으며 내가 내 손으로 하늘을 펴고 하늘의 모든 군대에게 명령하였노라
13 내가 공의로 그를 일으킨지라 그의 모든 길을 곧게 하리니 그가 나의 성읍을 건축할 것이며 사로잡힌 내 백성을 값이나 갚음이 없이 놓으리라 만군의 여호와의 말이니라 하셨느니라
14 여호와께서 이같이 말씀하시되 애굽의 소득과 구스가 무역한 것과 스바의 장대한 남자들이 네게로 건너와서 네게 속할 것이요 그들이 너를 따를 것이라 사슬에 매여 건너와서 네게 굴복하고 간구하기를 하나님이 과연 네게 계시고 그 외에는 다른 하나님이 없다 하리라 하시니라
15 구원자 이스라엘의 하나님이여 진실로 주는 스스로 숨어 계시는 하나님이시니이다
16 우상을 만드는 자는 부끄러움을 당하며 욕을 받아 다 함께 수욕 중에 들어갈 것이로되
17 이스라엘은 여호와께 구원을 받아 영원한 구원을 얻으리니 너희가 영원히 부끄러움을 당하거나 욕을 받지 아니하리로다
18 대저 여호와께서 이같이 말씀하시되 하늘을 창조하신 이 그는 하나님이시니 그가 땅을 지으시고 그것을 만드셨으며 그것을 견고하게 하시되 혼돈하게 창조하지 아니하시고 사람이 거주하게 그것을 지으셨으니 나는 여호와라 나 외에 다른 이가 없느니라
19 나는 감추어진 곳과 캄캄한 땅에서 말하지 아니하였으며 야곱 자손에게 너희가 나를 혼돈 중에서 찾으라고 이르지 아니하였노라 나 여호와는 의를 말하고 정직한 것을 알리느니라
20 열방 중에서 피난한 자들아 너희는 모여 오라 함께 가까이 나아오라 나무 우상을 가지고 다니며 구원하지 못하는 신에게 기도하는 자들은 무지한 자들이니라
21 너희는 알리며 진술하고 또 함께 의논하여 보라 이 일을 옛부터 듣게 한 자가 누구냐 이전부터 그것을 알게 한 자가 누구냐 나 여호와가 아니냐 나 외에 다른 신이 없나니 나는 공의를 행하며 구원을 베푸는 하나님이라 나 외에 다른 이가 없느니라
22 땅의 모든 끝이여 내게로 돌이켜 구원을 받으라 나는 하나님이라 다른 이가 없느니라
23 내가 나를 두고 맹세하기를 내 입에서 공의로운 말이 나갔은즉 돌아오지 아니하나니 내게 모든 무릎이 꿇겠고 모든 혀가 맹세하리라 하였노라
24 내게 대한 어떤 자의 말에 공의와 힘은 여호와께만 있나니 사람들이 그에게로 나아갈 것이라 무릇 그에게 노하는 자는 부끄러움을 당하리라 그러나
25 이스라엘 자손은 다 여호와로 말미암아 의롭다 함을 얻고 자랑하리라 하느니라

제46장

1 벨은 엎드러졌고 느보는 구부러졌도다 그들의 우상들은 짐승과 가축에게 실렸으니 너희가 떠메고 다니던 그것들이 피곤한 짐승의 무거운 짐이 되었도다
2 그들은 구부러졌고 그들은 일제히 엎드러졌으므로 그 짐을 구하여 내지 못하고 자기들도 잡혀 갔느니라
3 야곱의 집이여 이스라엘 집에 남은 모든 자여 내게 들을지어다 배에서 태어남으로부터 내게 안겼고 태에서 남으로부터 내게 업힌 너희여
4 너희가 노년에 이르기까지 내가 그리하겠고 백발이 되기까지 내가 너희를 품을 것이라 내가 지었은즉 내가 업을 것이요 내가 품고 구하여 내리라
5 너희가 나를 누구에게 비기며 누구와 짝하며 누구와 비교하여 서로 같다 하겠느냐
6 사람들이 주머니에서 금을 쏟아 내며 은을 저울에 달아 도금장이에게 주고 그것으로 신을 만들게 하고 그것에게 엎드려 경배하며
7 그것을 들어 어깨에 메어다가 그의 처소에 두면 그것이 서 있고 거기에서 능히 움직이지 못하며 그에게 부르짖어도 능히 응답하지 못하며 고난에서 구하여 내지도 못하느니라
8 너희 패역한 자들아 이 일을 기억하고 장부가 되라 이 일을 마음에 두라
9 너희는 옛적 일을 기억하라 나는 하나님이라 나 외에 다른 이가 없느니라 나는 하나님이라 나 같은 이가 없느니라
10 내가 시초부터 종말을 알리며 아직 이루지 아니한 일을 옛적부터 보이고 이르기를 나의 뜻이 설 것이니 내가 나의 모든 기뻐하는 것을 이루리라 하였노라
11 내가 동쪽에서 사나운 날짐승을 부르며 먼 나라에서 나의 뜻을 이룰 사람을 부를 것이라 내가 말하였은즉 반드시 이룰 것이요 계획하였은즉 반드시 시행하리라
12 마음이 완악하여 공의에서 멀리 떠난 너희여 내게 들으라
13 내가 나의 공의를 가깝게 할 것인즉 그것이 멀지 아니하나니 나의 구원이 지체하지 아니할 것이라 내가 나의 영광인 이스라엘을 위하여 구원을 시온에 베풀리라

제47장

1 처녀 딸 바벨론이여 내려와서 티끌에 앉으라 딸 갈대아여 보좌가 없어졌으니 땅에 앉으라 네가 다시는 곱고 아리땁다 일컬음을 받지 못할 것임이라
2 맷돌을 가지고 가루를 갈고 너울을 벗으며 치마를 걷어 다리를 드러내고 강을 건너라
3 네 속살이 드러나고 네 부끄러운 것이 보일 것이라 내가 보복하되 사람을 아끼지 아니하리라
4 우리의 구원자는 그의 이름이 만군의 여호와 이스라엘의 거룩한 이시니라
5 딸 갈대아여 잠잠히 앉으라 흑암으로 들어가라 네가 다시는 여러 왕국의 여주인이라 일컬음을 받지 못하리라
6 전에 내가 내 백성에게 노하여 내 기업을 욕되게 하여 그들을 네 손에 넘겨 주었거늘 네가 그들을 긍휼히 여기지 아니하고 늙은이에게 네 멍에를 심히 무겁게 메우며
7 말하기를 내가 영영히 여주인이 되리라 하고 이 일을 네 마음에 두지도 아니하며 그들의 종말도 생각하지 아니하였도다
8 그러므로 사치하고 평안히 지내며 마음에 이르기를 나뿐이라 나 외에 다른 이가 없도다 나는 과부로 지내지도 아니하며 자녀를 잃어버리는 일도 모르리라 하는 자여 너는 이제 들을지어다
9 한 날에 갑자기 자녀를 잃으며 과부가 되는 이 두 가지 일이 네게 임할 것이라 네가 무수한 주술과 많은 주문을 빌릴지라도 이 일이 온전히 네게 임하리라
10 네가 네 악을 의지하고 스스로 이르기를 나를 보는 자가 없다 하나니 네 지혜와 네 지식이 너를 유혹하였음이라 네 마음에 이르기를 나뿐이라 나 외에 다른 이가 없다 하였으므로
11 재앙이 네게 임하리라 그러나 네가 그 근원을 알지 못할 것이며 손해가 네게 이르리라 그러나 이를 물리칠 능력이 없을 것이며 파멸이 홀연히 네게 임하리라 그러나 네가 알지 못할 것이니라
12 이제 너는 젊어서부터 힘쓰던 주문과 많은 주술을 가지고 맞서 보라 혹시 유익을 얻을 수 있을는지, 혹시 놀라게 할 수 있을는지,
13 네가 많은 계략으로 말미암아 피곤하게 되었도다 하늘을 살피는 자와 별을 보는 자와 초하룻날에 예고하는 자들에게 일어나 네게 임할 그 일에서 너를 구원하게 하여 보라
14 보라 그들은 초개 같아서 불에 타리니 그 불꽃의 세력에서 스스로 구원하지 못할 것이라 이 불은 덥게 할 숯불이 아니요 그 앞에 앉을 만한 불도 아니니라
15 네가 같이 힘쓰던 자들이 네게 이같이 되리니 어려서부터 너와 함께 장사하던 자들이 각기 제 길로 흩어지고 너를 구원할 자가 없으리라

제48장

1 야곱의 집이여 이를 들을지어다 너희는 이스라엘의 이름으로 일컬음을 받으며 유다의 허리에서 나왔으며 여호와의 이름으로 맹세하며 이스라엘의 하나님을 기념하면서도 진실이 없고 공의가 없도다
2 그들은 거룩한 성 출신이라고 스스로 부르며 이스라엘의 하나님을 의지한다 하며 그의 이름이 만군의 여호와라고 하나
3 내가 예로부터 처음 일들을 알게 하였고 내 입에서 그것들이 나갔으며 또 내가 그것들을 듣게 하였고 내가 홀연히 행하여 그 일들이 이루어졌느니라
4 내가 알거니와 너는 완고하며 네 목은 쇠의 힘줄이요 네 이마는 놋이라
5 그러므로 내가 이 일을 예로부터 네게 알게 하였고 일이 이루어지기 전에 그것을 네게 듣게 하였느니라 그것을 네가 듣게 하여 네가 이것을 내 신이 행한 바요 내가 새긴 신상과 부어 만든 신상이 명령한 바라 말하지 못하게 하였느니라
6 네가 들었으니 이 모든 것을 보라 너희가 선전하지 아니하겠느냐 이제부터 내가 새 일 곧 네가 알지 못하던 은비한 일을 네게 듣게 하노니
7 이 일들은 지금 창조된 것이요 옛 것이 아니라 오늘 이전에는 네가 듣지 못하였으니 이는 네가 말하기를 내가 이미 알았노라 하지 못하게 하려 함이라
8 네가 과연 듣지도 못하였고 알지도 못하였으며 네 귀가 옛적부터 열리지 못하였나니 이는 네가 정녕 배신하여 모태에서부터 네가 배역한 자라 불린 줄을 내가 알았음이라
9 내 이름을 위하여 내가 노하기를 더디 할 것이며 내 영광을 위하여 내가 참고 너를 멸절하지 아니하리라
10 보라 내가 너를 연단하였으나 은처럼 하지 아니하고 너를 고난의 풀무 불에서 택하였노라
11 나는 나를 위하며 나를 위하여 이를 이룰 것이라 어찌 내 이름을 욕되게 하리요 내 영광을 다른 자에게 주지 아니하리라
12 야곱아 내가 부른 이스라엘아 내게 들으라 나는 그니 나는 처음이요 또 나는 마지막이라
13 과연 내 손이 땅의 기초를 정하였고 내 오른손이 하늘을 폈나니 내가 그들을 부르면 그것들이 일제히 서느니라
14 너희는 다 모여 들으라 나 여호와가 사랑하는 자는 나의 기뻐하는 뜻을 바벨론에 행하리니 그의 팔이 갈대아인에게 임할 것이라 그들 중에 누가 이 일들을 알게 하였느냐
15 나 곧 내가 말하였고 또 내가 그를 부르며 그를 인도하였나니 그 길이 형통하리라
16 너희는 내게 가까이 나아와 이것을 들으라 내가 처음부터 비밀히 말하지 아니하였나니 그것이 있을 때부터 내가 거기에 있었노라 하셨느니라 이제는 주 여호와께서 나와 그의 영을 보내셨느니라
17 너희의 구속자시요 이스라엘의 거룩하신 이이신 여호와께서 이르시되 나는 네게 유익하도록 가르치고 너를 마땅히 행할 길로 인도하는 네 하나님 여호와라
18 네가 나의 명령에 주의하였더라면 네 평강이 강과 같았겠고 네 공의가 바다 물결 같았을 것이며
19 네 자손이 모래 같았겠고 네 몸의 소생이 모래 알 같아서 그의 이름이 내 앞에서 끊어지지 아니하였겠고 없어지지 아니하였으리라 하셨느니라
20 너희는 바벨론에서 나와서 갈대아인을 피하고 즐거운 소리로 이를 알게 하여 들려 주며 땅 끝까지 반포하여 이르기를 여호와께서 그의 종 야곱을 구속하셨다 하라
21 여호와께서 그들을 사막으로 통과하게 하시던 때에 그들이 목마르지 아니하게 하시되 그들을 위하여 바위에서 물이 흘러나게 하시며 바위를 쪼개사 물이 솟아나게 하셨느니라
22 여호와께서 말씀하시되 악인에게는 평강이 없다 하셨느니라

Isaiah 44-48

Chapter 44

1 "But now hear, O Jacob my servant, Israel whom I have chosen!
2 Thus says the LORD who made you, who formed you from the womb and will help you: Fear not, O Jacob my servant, Jeshurun whom I have chosen.
3 For I will pour water on the thirsty land, and streams on the dry ground; I will pour my Spirit upon your offspring, and my blessing on your descendants.
4 They shall spring up among the grass like willows by flowing streams.
5 This one will say, 'I am the LORD's,' another will call on the name of Jacob, and another will write on his hand, 'The LORD's,' and name himself by the name of Israel."
6 Thus says the LORD, the King of Israel and his Redeemer, the LORD of hosts: "I am the first and I am the last; besides me there is no god.
7 Who is like me? Let him proclaim it. Let him declare and set it before me, since I appointed an ancient people. Let them declare what is to come, and what will happen.
8 Fear not, nor be afraid; have I not told you from of old and declared it? And you are my witnesses! Is there a God besides me? There is no Rock; I know not any."
9 All who fashion idols are nothing, and the things they delight in do not profit. Their witnesses neither see nor know, that they may be put to shame.
10 Who fashions a god or casts an idol that is profitable for nothing?
11 Behold, all his companions shall be put to shame, and the craftsmen are only human. Let them all assemble, let them stand forth. They shall be terrified; they shall be put to shame together.
12 The ironsmith takes a cutting tool and works it over the coals. He fashions it with hammers and works it with his strong arm. He becomes hungry, and his strength fails; he drinks no water and is faint.
13 The carpenter stretches a line; he marks it out with a pencil. He shapes it with planes and marks it with a compass. He shapes it into the figure of a man, with the beauty of a man, to dwell in a house.
14 He cuts down cedars, or he chooses a cypress tree or an oak and lets it grow strong among the trees of the forest. He plants a cedar and the rain nourishes it.
15 Then it becomes fuel for a man. He takes a part of it and warms himself; he kindles a fire and bakes bread. Also he makes a god and worships it; he makes it an idol and falls down before it.
16 Half of it he burns in the fire. Over the half he eats meat; he roasts it and is satisfied. Also he warms himself and says, "Aha, I am warm, I have seen the fire!"
17 And the rest of it he makes into a god, his idol, and falls down to it and worships it. He prays to it and says, "Deliver me, for you are my god!"
18 They know not, nor do they discern, for he has shut their eyes, so that they cannot see, and their hearts, so that they cannot understand.
19 No one considers, nor is there knowledge or discernment to say, "Half of it I burned in the fire; I also baked bread on its coals; I roasted meat and have eaten. And shall I make the rest of it an abomination? Shall I fall down before a block of wood?"
20 He feeds on ashes; a deluded heart has led him astray, and he cannot deliver himself or say, "Is there not a lie in my right hand?"
21 Remember these things, O Jacob, and Israel, for you are my servant; I formed you; you are my servant; O Israel, you will not be forgotten by me.
22 I have blotted out your transgressions like a cloud and your sins like mist; return to me, for I have redeemed you.
23 Sing, O heavens, for the LORD has done it; shout, O depths of the earth; break forth into singing, O mountains, O forest, and every tree in it! For the LORD has redeemed Jacob, and will be glorified in Israel.
24 Thus says the LORD, your Redeemer, who formed you from the womb: "I am the LORD, who made all things, who alone stretched out the heavens, who spread out the earth by myself,
25 who frustrates the signs of liars and makes fools of diviners, who turns wise men back and makes their knowledge foolish,
26 who confirms the word of his servant and fulfills the counsel of his messengers, who says of Jerusalem, 'She shall be inhabited,' and of the cities of Judah, 'They shall be built, and I will raise up their ruins';
27 who says to the deep, 'Be dry; I will dry up your rivers';
28 who says of Cyrus, 'He is my shepherd, and he shall fulfill all my purpose'; saying of Jerusalem, 'She shall be built,' and of the temple, 'Your foundation shall be laid.'"

Chapter 45

1 Thus says the LORD to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have grasped, to subdue nations before him and to loose the belts of kings, to open doors before him that gates may not be closed:
2 "I will go before you and level the exalted places, I will break in pieces the doors of bronze and cut through the bars of iron,
3 I will give you the treasures of darkness and the hoards in secret places, that you may know that it is I, the LORD, the God of Israel, who call you by your name.
4 For the sake of my servant Jacob, and Israel my chosen, I call you by your name, I name you, though you do not know me.
5 I am the LORD, and there is no other, besides me there is no God; I equip you, though you do not know me,
6 that people may know, from the rising of the sun and from the west, that there is none besides me; I am the LORD, and there is no other.
7 I form light and create darkness, I make well-being and create calamity, I am the LORD, who does all these things.
8 "Shower, O heavens, from above, and let the clouds rain down righteousness; let the earth open, that salvation and righteousness may bear fruit; let the earth cause them both to sprout; I the LORD have created it.
9 "Woe to him who strives with him who formed him, a pot among earthen pots! Does the clay say to him who forms it, 'What are you making?' or 'Your work has no handles'?
10 Woe to him who says to a father, 'What are you begetting?' or to a woman, 'With what are you in labor?'"
11 Thus says the LORD, the Holy One of Israel, and the one who formed him: "Ask me of things to come; will you command me concerning my children and the work of my hands?
12 I made the earth and created man on it; it was my hands that stretched out the heavens, and I commanded all their host.
13 I have stirred him up in righteousness, and I will make all his ways level; he shall build my city and set my exiles free, not for price or reward," says the LORD of hosts.
14 Thus says the LORD: "The wealth of Egypt and the merchandise of Cush, and the Sabeans, men of stature, shall come over to you and be yours; they shall follow you; they shall come over in chains and bow down to you. They will plead with you, saying: 'Surely God is in you, and there is no other, no god besides him.'"
15 Truly, you are a God who hides himself, O God of Israel, the Savior.
16 All of them are put to shame and confounded; the makers of idols go in confusion together.
17 But Israel is saved by the LORD with everlasting salvation; you shall not be put to shame or confounded to all eternity.
18 For thus says the LORD, who created the heavens (he is God!), who formed the earth and made it (he established it; he did not create it empty, he formed it to be inhabited!): "I am the LORD, and there is no other.
19 I did not speak in secret, in a land of darkness; I did not say to the offspring of Jacob, 'Seek me in vain.' I the LORD speak the truth; I declare what is right.
20 "Assemble yourselves and come; draw near together, you survivors of the nations! They have no knowledge who carry about their wooden idols, and keep on praying to a god that cannot save.
21 Declare and present your case; let them take counsel together! Who told this long ago? Who declared it of old? Was it not I, the LORD? And there is no other god besides me, a righteous God and a Savior; there is none besides me.
22 "Turn to me and be saved, all the ends of the earth! For I am God, and there is no other.
23 By myself I have sworn; from my mouth has gone out in righteousness a word that shall not return: 'To me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear allegiance.'
24 "Only in the LORD, it shall be said of me, are righteousness and strength; to him shall come and be ashamed all who were incensed against him.
25 In the LORD all the offspring of Israel shall be justified and shall glory."

Chapter 46

1 Bel bows down; Nebo stoops; their idols are on beasts and livestock; these things you carry are borne as burdens on weary beasts.
2 They stoop; they bow down together; they cannot save the burden, but themselves go into captivity.
3 "Listen to me, O house of Jacob, all the remnant of the house of Israel, who have been borne by me from before your birth, carried from the womb;
4 even to your old age I am he, and to gray hairs I will carry you. I have made, and I will bear; I will carry and will save.
5 "To whom will you liken me and make me equal, and compare me, that we may be alike?
6 Those who lavish gold from the purse, and weigh out silver in the scales, hire a goldsmith, and he makes it into a god; then they fall down and worship!
7 They lift it to their shoulders, they carry it, they set it in its place, and it stands there; it cannot move from its place. If one cries to it, it does not answer or save him from his trouble.
8 "Remember this and stand firm, recall it to mind, you transgressors,
9 remember the former things of old; for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me,
10 declaring the end from the beginning and from ancient times things not yet done, saying, 'My counsel shall stand, and I will accomplish all my purpose,'
11 calling a bird of prey from the east, the man of my counsel from a far country. I have spoken, and I will bring it to pass; I have purposed, and I will do it.
12 "Listen to me, you stubborn of heart, you who are far from righteousness:
13 I bring near my righteousness; it is not far off, and my salvation will not delay; I will put salvation in Zion, for Israel my glory."

Chapter 47

1 Come down and sit in the dust, O virgin daughter of Babylon; sit on the ground without a throne, O daughter of the Chaldeans! For you shall no more be called tender and delicate.
2 Take the millstones and grind flour, put off your veil, strip off your robe, uncover your legs, pass through the rivers.
3 Your nakedness shall be uncovered, and your disgrace shall be seen. I will take vengeance, and I will spare no one.
4 Our Redeemer--the LORD of hosts is his name-- is the Holy One of Israel.
5 Sit in silence, and go into darkness, O daughter of the Chaldeans; for you shall no more be called the mistress of kingdoms.
6 I was angry with my people; I profaned my heritage; I gave them into your hand; you showed them no mercy; on the aged you made your yoke exceedingly heavy.
7 You said, "I shall be mistress forever," so that you did not lay these things to heart or remember their end.
8 Now therefore hear this, you lover of pleasures, who sit securely, who say in your heart, "I am, and there is no one besides me; I shall not sit as a widow or know the loss of children":
9 These two things shall come to you in a moment, in one day; the loss of children and widowhood shall come upon you in full measure, in spite of your many sorceries and the great power of your enchantments.
10 You felt secure in your wickedness, you said, "No one sees me"; your wisdom and your knowledge led you astray, and you said in your heart, "I am, and there is no one besides me."
11 But evil shall come upon you, which you will not know how to charm away; disaster shall fall upon you, for which you will not be able to atone; and ruin shall come upon you suddenly, of which you know nothing.
12 Stand fast in your enchantments and your many sorceries, with which you have labored from your youth; perhaps you may be able to succeed; perhaps you may inspire terror.
13 You are wearied with your many counsels; let them stand forth and save you, those who divide the heavens, who gaze at the stars, who at the new moons make known what shall come upon you.
14 Behold, they are like stubble; the fire consumes them; they cannot deliver themselves from the power of the flame. No coal for warming oneself is this, no fire to sit before!
15 Such to you are those with whom you have labored, who have done business with you from your youth; they wander about, each in his own direction; there is no one to save you.

Chapter 48

1 Hear this, O house of Jacob, who are called by the name of Israel, and who came from the waters of Judah, who swear by the name of the LORD and confess the God of Israel, but not in truth or right.
2 For they call themselves after the holy city, and stay themselves on the God of Israel; the LORD of hosts is his name.
3 "The former things I declared of old; they went out from my mouth, and I announced them; then suddenly I did them, and they came to pass.
4 Because I know that you are obstinate, and your neck is an iron sinew and your forehead brass,
5 I declared them to you from of old, before they came to pass I announced them to you, lest you should say, 'My idol did them, my carved image and my metal image commanded them.'
6 "You have heard; now see all this; and will you not declare it? From this time forth I announce to you new things, hidden things that you have not known.
7 They are created now, not long ago; before today you have never heard of them, lest you should say, 'Behold, I knew them.'
8 You have never heard, you have never known, from of old your ear has not been opened. For I knew that you would surely deal treacherously, and that from before birth you were called a rebel.
9 "For my name's sake I defer my anger, for the sake of my praise I restrain it for you, that I may not cut you off.
10 Behold, I have refined you, but not as silver; I have tried you in the furnace of affliction.
11 For my own sake, for my own sake, I do it, for how should my name be profaned? My glory I will not give to another.
12 "Listen to me, O Jacob, and Israel, whom I called! I am he; I am the first, and I am the last.
13 My hand laid the foundation of the earth, and my right hand spread out the heavens; when I call to them, they stand forth together.
14 "Assemble, all of you, and listen! Who among them has declared these things? The LORD loves him; he shall perform his purpose on Babylon, and his arm shall be against the Chaldeans.
15 I, even I, have spoken and called him; I have brought him, and he will prosper in his way.
16 Draw near to me, hear this: from the beginning I have not spoken in secret, from the time it came to be I have been there." And now the Lord GOD has sent me, and his Spirit.
17 Thus says the LORD, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: "I am the LORD your God, who teaches you to profit, who leads you in the way you should go.
18 Oh that you had paid attention to my commandments! Then your peace would have been like a river, and your righteousness like the waves of the sea;
19 your offspring would have been like the sand, and your descendants like its grains; their name would never be cut off or destroyed from before me."
20 Go out from Babylon, flee from Chaldea, declare this with a shout of joy, proclaim it, send it out to the end of the earth; say, "The LORD has redeemed his servant Jacob!"
21 They did not thirst when he led them through the deserts; he made water flow for them from the rock; he split the rock and the water gushed out.
22 "There is no peace," says the LORD, "for the wicked."
