에스겔의 환상과 소명
제1장
1 서른째 해 넷째 달 초닷새에 내가 그발 강 가 사로잡힌 자 중에 있을 때에 하늘이 열리며 하나님의 모습이 내게 보이니
2 여호야긴 왕이 사로잡힌 지 오 년 그 달 초닷새라
3 갈대아 땅 그발 강 가에서 여호와의 말씀이 부시의 아들 제사장 나 에스겔에게 특별히 임하고 여호와의 권능이 내 위에 있으니라
4 내가 보니 북쪽에서부터 폭풍과 큰 구름이 오는데 그 속에서 불이 번쩍번쩍하여 빛이 그 사방에 비치며 그 불 가운데 단 쇠 같은 것이 나타나 보이고
5 그 속에서 네 생물의 형상이 나타나는데 그들의 모양이 이러하니 그들에게 사람의 형상이 있더라
6 그들에게 각각 네 얼굴과 네 날개가 있고
7 그들의 다리는 곧은 다리요 그들의 발바닥은 송아지 발바닥 같고 광낸 구리 같이 빛나며
8 그 사방 날개 밑에는 각각 사람의 손이 있더라 그 네 생물의 얼굴과 날개가 이러하니
9 날개는 다 서로 연하였으며 갈 때에는 돌이키지 아니하고 일제히 앞으로 곧게 행하며
10 그 얼굴들의 모양은 넷의 앞은 사람의 얼굴이요 넷의 오른쪽은 사자의 얼굴이요 넷의 왼쪽은 소의 얼굴이요 넷의 뒤는 독수리의 얼굴이니
11 그 얼굴은 그러하며 그 날개는 들어 펴서 각기 둘씩 서로 연하였고 또 둘은 몸을 가렸으며
12 영이 어떤 쪽으로 가면 그 생물들도 그대로 가되 돌이키지 아니하고 일제히 앞으로 곧게 행하며
13 또 생물들의 모양은 타는 숯불과 횃불 모양 같은데 그 불이 그 생물 사이에서 오르락내리락 하며 그 불은 광채가 있고 그 가운데에서는 번개가 나며
14 그 생물들은 번개 모양 같이 왕래하더라
15 내가 그 생물들을 보니 그 생물들 곁에 있는 땅 위에는 바퀴가 있는데 그 네 얼굴을 따라 하나씩 있고
16 그 바퀴의 모양과 그 구조는 황옥 같이 보이는데 그 넷은 똑같은 모양을 가지고 있으며 그들의 모양과 구조는 바퀴 안에 바퀴가 있는 것 같으며
17 그들이 갈 때에는 사방으로 향한 대로 돌이키지 아니하고 가며
18 그 둘레는 높고 무서우며 그 네 둘레로 돌아가면서 눈이 가득하며
19 그 생물들이 갈 때에 바퀴들도 그 곁에서 가고 그 생물들이 땅에서 들릴 때에 바퀴들도 들려서
20 영이 어떤 쪽으로 가면 생물들도 영이 가려 하는 곳으로 가고 바퀴들도 그 곁에서 들리니 이는 생물의 영이 그 바퀴들 가운데에 있음이니라
21 그들이 가면 이들도 가고 그들이 서면 이들도 서고 그들이 땅에서 들릴 때에는 이들도 그 곁에서 들리니 이는 생물의 영이 그 바퀴들 가운데에 있음이더라
22 그 생물의 머리 위에는 수정 같은 궁창의 형상이 있어 보기에 두려운데 그들의 머리 위에 펼쳐져 있고
23 그 궁창 밑에 생물들의 날개가 서로 향하여 펴 있는데 이 생물은 두 날개로 몸을 가렸고 저 생물도 두 날개로 몸을 가렸더라
24 생물들이 갈 때에 내가 그 날개 소리를 들으니 많은 물 소리와도 같으며 전능자의 음성과도 같으며 떠드는 소리 곧 군대의 소리와도 같더니 그 생물이 설 때에 그 날개를 내렸더라
25 그 머리 위에 있는 궁창 위에서부터 음성이 나더라 그 생물이 설 때에 그 날개를 내렸더라
26 그 머리 위에 있는 궁창 위에 보좌의 형상이 있는데 그 모양이 남보석 같고 그 보좌의 형상 위에 한 형상이 있어 사람의 모양 같더라
27 내가 보니 그 허리 위의 모양은 단 쇠 같아서 그 속과 주위가 불 같고 내가 보니 그 허리 아래의 모양도 불 같아서 사방으로 광채가 나며
28 그 사방 광채의 모양은 비 오는 날 구름에 있는 무지개 같으니 이는 여호와의 영광의 형상의 모양이라 내가 보고 엎드려 말씀하시는 이의 음성을 들으니라
제2장
1 그가 내게 이르시되 인자야 네 발로 일어서라 내가 네게 말하리라 하시며
2 그가 내게 말씀하실 때에 그 영이 내게 임하사 나를 일으켜 내 발로 세우시기로 내가 그 말씀하시는 자의 소리를 들으니
3 내게 이르시되 인자야 내가 너를 이스라엘 자손 곧 패역한 백성, 나를 배반하는 자에게 보내노라 그들과 그 조상들이 내게 범죄하여 오늘까지 이르렀나니
4 이 자손은 얼굴이 뻔뻔하고 마음이 굳은 자니라 내가 너를 그들에게 보내노니 너는 그들에게 이르기를 주 여호와의 말씀이 이러하시다 하라
5 그들은 패역한 족속이라 그들이 듣든지 아니 듣든지 그들 가운데에 선지자가 있음을 알지니라
6 인자야 너는 비록 가시와 찔레와 함께 있으며 전갈 가운데에 거주할지라도 그들을 두려워하지 말고 그들의 말을 두려워하지 말지어다 그들은 패역한 족속이라도 그 말을 두려워하지 말며 그 얼굴을 무서워하지 말지어다
7 그들은 심히 패역한 자라 그들이 듣든지 아니 듣든지 너는 내 말로 고할지어다
8 너 인자야 내가 네게 이르는 말을 듣고 그 패역한 족속 같이 패역하지 말고 네 입을 벌리고 내가 네게 주는 것을 먹으라 하시기로
9 내가 보니 보라 한 손이 나를 향하여 펴지고 보라 그 안에 두루마리 책이 있더라
10 그가 그것을 내 앞에 펴시니 그 안팎에 글이 있는데 그 위에 애가와 애곡과 재앙의 말이 기록되었더라
제3장
1 또 그가 내게 이르시되 인자야 너는 발견한 것을 먹으라 너는 이 두루마리를 먹고 가서 이스라엘 족속에게 말하라 하시기로
2 내가 입을 벌리니 그가 그 두루마리를 내게 먹이시며
3 내게 이르시되 인자야 내가 네게 주는 이 두루마리를 네 배에 넣으며 네 창자에 채우라 하시기에 내가 먹으니 그것이 내 입에서 달기가 꿀 같더라
4 그가 또 내게 이르시되 인자야 이스라엘 족속에게 가서 내 말로 그들에게 고하라
5 너를 언어가 다르거나 말이 어려운 백성에게 보내는 것이 아니요 이스라엘 족속에게 보내는 것이라
6 너를 언어가 다르거나 말이 어려워 네가 그들의 말을 알아 듣지 못할 나라들에게 보내는 것이 아니니라 내가 너를 그들에게 보냈다면 그들은 정녕 네 말을 들었으리라
7 그러나 이스라엘 족속은 이마가 굳고 마음이 굳어 네 말을 듣고자 아니하리니 이는 내 말을 듣고자 아니함이니라
8 보라 내가 그들의 얼굴을 마주보도록 네 얼굴을 굳게 하였고 그들의 이마를 마주보도록 네 이마를 굳게 하였으되
9 네 이마를 화석보다 굳은 금강석 같이 하였으니 그들이 비록 반역하는 족속이라도 두려워하지 말며 그들의 얼굴을 무서워하지 말라 하시니라
10 또 내게 이르시되 인자야 내가 네게 이를 모든 말을 너는 마음으로 받으며 귀로 듣고
11 사로잡힌 네 민족에게로 가서 그들이 듣든지 아니 듣든지 그들에게 고하여 이르기를 주 여호와의 말씀이 이러하시다 하라
12 때에 주의 영이 나를 들어올리시는데 내가 내 뒤에서 크게 울리는 소리를 들으니 찬송할지어다 여호와의 영광이 그의 처소로부터 나오는도다 하니
13 이는 생물들의 날개가 서로 부딪치는 소리와 생물 곁의 바퀴 소리라 크게 울리는 소리더라
14 주의 영이 나를 들어올려 데리고 가시는데 내가 근심하고 분한 마음으로 가니 여호와의 권능이 힘 있게 나를 감동시키시더라
15 이에 내가 델아빕에 이르러 그 사로잡힌 백성 곧 그발 강 가에 거주하는 자들에게 나아가 그 중에서 두려워 떨며 칠 일을 지내니라
16 칠 일 후에 여호와의 말씀이 내게 임하여 이르시되
17 인자야 내가 너를 이스라엘 족속의 파수꾼으로 세웠으니 너는 내 입의 말을 듣고 나를 대신하여 그들을 깨우치라
18 가령 내가 악인에게 말하기를 너는 꼭 죽으리라 할 때에 네가 깨우치지 아니하거나 말로 악인에게 일러서 그의 악한 길을 떠나 생명을 구원하게 하지 아니하면 그 악인은 그의 죄악 중에서 죽으려니와 내가 그의 피 값을 네 손에서 찾을 것이고
19 네가 악인을 깨우치되 그가 그의 악한 마음과 악한 행위에서 돌이키지 아니하면 그는 그의 죄악 중에서 죽으려니와 너는 네 생명을 보존하리라
20 또 의인이 그의 공의에서 돌이켜 악을 행할 때에는 이미 행한 그의 공의는 기억할 바 아니라 내가 그 앞에 거치는 것을 두면 그가 죽을지니 이는 네가 그를 깨우치지 않음이니라 그는 그의 죄 중에서 죽으려니와 그의 피 값은 내가 네 손에서 찾으리라
21 그러나 네가 그 의인을 깨우쳐 범죄하지 아니하게 함으로 그가 범죄하지 아니하면 정녕 살리니 이는 깨우침을 받음이며 너도 네 영혼을 보존하리라
22 여호와께서 권능으로 거기서 내게 임하시고 또 내게 이르시되 일어나 들로 나아가라 내가 거기서 너와 말하리라 하시기로
23 내가 일어나 들로 나아가니 여호와의 영광이 거기에 머물렀는데 내가 전에 그발 강 가에서 보던 영광과 같은지라 내가 곧 엎드리니
24 주의 영이 내게 임하사 나를 일으켜 내 발로 세우시고 내게 말씀하여 이르시되 너는 가서 네 집에 들어가 문을 닫으라
25 너 인자야 보라 무리가 네 위에 줄을 놓아 너를 동여매리니 네가 그들 가운데에서 나오지 못할 것이라
26 내가 네 혀를 네 입천장에 붙게 하여 네가 말 못하는 자가 되어 그들을 꾸짖는 자가 되지 못하게 하리니 그들은 패역한 족속임이니라
27 그러나 내가 너와 말할 때에 네 입을 열리니 너는 그들에게 이르기를 주 여호와의 말씀이 이러하시다 하라 들을 자는 들을 것이요 듣기 싫은 자는 듣지 아니하리니 그들은 반역하는 족속임이니라
제4장
1 너 인자야 토판을 가져다가 그것을 네 앞에 놓고 한 성읍 곧 예루살렘을 그 위에 그리고
2 그 성읍을 에워싸되 그것을 향하여 사다리를 세우고 그것을 향하여 흙으로 언덕을 쌓고 그것을 향하여 진을 치고 그것을 향하여 공성퇴를 둘러 세우고
3 또 철판을 가져다가 너와 성읍 사이에 두어 철벽을 삼고 성을 포위하는 것처럼 에워싸라 이것이 이스라엘 족속에게 징조가 되리라
4 너는 또 왼쪽으로 누워 이스라엘 족속의 죄악을 짊어지되 네가 눕는 날수대로 그 죄악을 담당할지니라
5 내가 그들의 범죄한 햇수대로 네게 날수를 정하였나니 곧 삼백구십 일이니라 너는 이렇게 이스라엘 족속의 죄악을 담당하고
6 그 수가 차거든 너는 오른쪽으로 누워 유다 족속의 죄악을 담당하라 내가 네게 사십 일로 정하였나니 하루가 일 년이니라
7 너는 또 네 얼굴을 에워싸인 예루살렘 쪽으로 향하고 팔을 걷어 올리고 예언하라
8 내가 줄로 너를 동이리니 네가 에워싸는 날이 끝나기까지 몸을 이리 저리 돌리지 못하리라
9 너는 밀과 보리와 콩과 팥과 조와 귀리를 가져다가 한 그릇에 담고 너를 위하여 떡을 만들어 네가 옆으로 눕는 날수 곧 삼백구십 일 동안 먹되
10 너는 음식물을 달아서 하루 이십 세겔씩 때를 따라 먹고
11 물도 육분의 일 힌씩 되어서 때를 따라 마시라
12 너는 그것을 보리떡처럼 만들어 먹되 그들의 목전에서 인분 불을 피워 구울지니라
13 또 여호와께서 이르시되 내가 여러 나라들로 쫓아내어 흩어 버릴 이스라엘 자손이 거기서 이같이 부정한 떡을 먹으리라 하시기로
14 내가 말하되 아하 주 여호와여 나는 영혼을 더럽힌 일이 없었나이다 어려서부터 지금까지 스스로 죽은 것이나 짐승에게 찢긴 것을 먹지 아니하였고 가증한 고기를 입에 넣지 아니하였나이다
15 여호와께서 내게 이르시되 보라 쇠똥으로 인분을 대신하기를 허락하노니 너는 그것으로 떡을 구울지니라
16 또 내게 이르시되 인자야 내가 예루살렘에서 의뢰하는 양식을 끊으리니 백성이 근심 중에 떡을 달아 먹고 두려워 떨며 물을 되어 마시다가
17 떡과 물이 부족하여 피차에 두려워 하여 떨며 그 죄악 중에서 쇠패하리라
제5장
1 너 인자야 너는 날카로운 칼을 가져다가 삭도로 삼아 네 머리털과 수염을 깎아서 저울로 달아 나누어 두라
2 그 성읍을 에워싸는 날이 차거든 너는 터럭 삼분의 일은 성읍 안에서 불사르고 삼분의 일은 성읍 사방에서 칼로 치고 또 삼분의 일은 바람에 흩으라 내가 그 뒤를 따라 칼을 빼리라
3 너는 터럭 중에서 조금을 네 옷자락에 싸고
4 또 그 가운데에서 얼마를 불에 던져 사르라 그 속에서 불이 이스라엘 온 족속에게로 나오리라
5 주 여호와께서 이와 같이 이르시되 이것이 곧 예루살렘이라 내가 그를 이방인 가운데에 두어 나라들이 둘러 있게 하였거늘
6 그가 내 규례를 거슬러서 이방인보다 악을 더 행하며 내 율례도 그리함이 그를 둘러 있는 나라들보다 더하니 이는 그들이 내 규례를 버리고 내 율례를 행하지 아니하였음이니라
7 그러므로 나 주 여호와가 말하노라 너희 요란함이 너희를 둘러싸고 있는 이방인들보다 더하여 내 율례를 행하지 아니하며 내 규례를 지키지 아니하고 너희를 둘러 있는 이방인들의 규례대로도 행하지 아니하였느니라
8 그러므로 나 주 여호와가 말하노라 나 곧 내가 너를 치며 이방인의 목전에서 너에게 벌을 내리되
9 네 모든 가증한 일로 말미암아 내가 전무후무하게 네게 내릴지라
10 그리한즉 네 가운데에서 아버지가 아들을 잡아먹고 아들이 그 아버지를 잡아먹으리라 내가 벌을 네게 내리고 너희 중에 남은 자를 다 사방에 흩으리라
11 그러므로 나 주 여호와가 말하노라 내가 나의 삶을 두고 맹세하노니 네가 모든 미운 물건과 모든 가증한 일로 내 성소를 더럽혔은즉 나도 너를 아끼지 아니하며 긍휼을 베풀지 아니하고 미약하게 하리니
12 너희 가운데에서 삼분의 일은 전염병으로 죽으며 기근으로 멸망할 것이요 삼분의 일은 너의 사방에서 칼에 엎드러질 것이며 삼분의 일은 내가 사방에 흩어 버리고 또 그 뒤를 따라 가며 칼을 빼리라
13 이와 같이 내 노가 다한즉 그들을 향한 분이 풀려서 내 마음이 가라앉으리라 내 분이 그들에게 다한즉 나 여호와가 열심으로 말한 줄을 그들이 알리라
14 내가 이르되 또 너를 황무하게 하고 너를 둘러싸고 있는 이방인들 중에서 모든 지나가는 자의 목전에 모욕 거리가 되게 하리니
15 내 노와 분과 중한 책망으로 네게 벌을 내린즉 너를 둘러싸고 있는 이방인들에게 네가 수치와 조롱 거리가 되고 두려움과 경고가 되리라 나 여호와의 말이니라
16 내가 멸망하게 하는 기근의 독한 화살을 너희에게 보내되 기근을 더하여 너희가 의뢰하는 양식을 끊을 것이라
17 내가 기근과 사나운 짐승을 너희에게 보내 외롭게 하고 너희 가운데에 전염병과 살륙이 일어나게 하고 또 칼이 너희에게 임하게 하리라 나 여호와의 말이니라
제6장
1 여호와의 말씀이 내게 임하여 이르시되
2 인자야 너는 이스라엘 산을 향하여 그들에게 예언하여
3 이르기를 이스라엘 산들아 주 여호와의 말씀을 들으라 주 여호와께서 산과 언덕과 시내와 골짜기를 향하여 이같이 말씀하시기를 나 곧 내가 칼이 너희에게 임하게 하여 너희 산당을 멸하리니
4 너희 제단들이 황폐하고 분향제단들이 깨뜨려질 것이며 너희가 죽임을 당하여 너희 우상 앞에 엎드러지게 할 것이라
5 이스라엘 자손의 시체를 그 우상 앞에 두며 너희 해골을 너희 제단 사방에 흩으리라
6 내가 너희가 거주하는 모든 성읍이 사막이 되게 하며 산당을 황폐하게 하리니 이는 너희 제단이 깨어지고 황폐하며 너희 우상들이 깨어져 없어지며 너희 분향제단들이 찍히며 너희가 만든 것이 폐하여지며
7 또 너희가 죽임을 당하여 엎드러지게 하여 내가 여호와인 줄을 너희가 알게 하려 함이라
8 그러나 너희가 여러 나라에 흩어질 때에 내가 너희 중에서 칼을 피하여 이방인들 중에 살아 남은 자가 있게 할지라
9 너희 중에서 살아 남은 자가 사로잡혀 이방인들 중에 있어서 나를 기억하되 그들이 음란한 마음으로 나를 떠나고 음란한 눈으로 우상을 섬겨 나를 근심하게 한 것을 기억하고 스스로 한탄하리니 이는 그 모든 가증한 일로 악을 행하였음이라
10 그 때에야 그들이 나를 여호와인 줄 알리라 내가 이런 재앙을 그들에게 내리겠다 한 말이 헛되지 아니하니라
11 주 여호와께서 이같이 이르시되 너는 손뼉을 치고 발을 구르며 말할지어다 오호라 이스라엘 족속이 모든 가증한 악을 행하므로 마침내 칼과 기근과 전염병에 망하되
12 먼 데 있는 자는 전염병에 죽고 가까운 데 있는 자는 칼에 엎드러지고 남아 있어 에워싸인 자는 기근에 죽으리라 이같이 내 진노를 그들에게 이룬즉
13 그 죽임 당한 시체들이 그 우상들 사이에, 제단 사방에, 각 높은 고개 위에, 모든 산 꼭대기에, 모든 푸른 나무 아래에, 무성한 상수리나무 아래 곧 그 우상에게 분향하던 곳에 있으리니 내가 여호와인 줄을 너희가 알리라
14 내가 내 손을 그들의 위에 펴서 그가 사는 온 땅 곧 광야에서부터 디블라까지 황량하고 황폐하게 하리니 내가 여호와인 줄을 그들이 알리라
Ezekiel 1-6
Chapter 1
1 In the thirtieth year, in the fourth month, on the fifth day of the month, as I was among the exiles by the Chebar canal, the heavens were opened, and I saw visions of God.
2 On the fifth day of the month (it was the fifth year of the exile of King Jehoiachin),
3 the word of the LORD came to Ezekiel the priest, the son of Buzi, in the land of the Chaldeans by the Chebar canal, and the hand of the LORD was upon him there.
4 As I looked, behold, a stormy wind came out of the north, and a great cloud, with brightness around it, and fire flashing forth continually, and in the midst of the fire, as it were gleaming metal.
5 And from the midst of it came the likeness of four living creatures. And this was their appearance: they had a human likeness,
6 but each had four faces, and each of them had four wings.
7 Their legs were straight, and the soles of their feet were like the sole of a calf's foot. And they sparkled like burnished bronze.
8 Under their wings on their four sides they had human hands. And the four had their faces and their wings thus:
9 their wings touched one another. Each one of them went straight forward, without turning as they went.
10 As for the likeness of their faces, each had a human face. The four had the face of a lion on the right side, the four had the face of an ox on the left side, and the four had the face of an eagle.
11 Such were their faces. And their wings were spread out above. Each creature had two wings, each of which touched the wing of another, while two covered their bodies.
12 And each went straight forward. Wherever the spirit would go, they went, without turning as they went.
13 As for the likeness of the living creatures, their appearance was like burning coals of fire, like the appearance of torches moving to and fro among the living creatures. And the fire was bright, and out of the fire went forth lightning.
14 And the living creatures darted to and fro, like the appearance of a flash of lightning.
15 Now as I looked at the living creatures, I saw a wheel on the earth beside the living creatures, one for each of the four of them.
16 As for the appearance of the wheels and their construction: their appearance was like the gleaming of beryl. And the four had the same likeness, their appearance and construction being as it were a wheel within a wheel.
17 When they went, they went in any of their four directions without turning as they went.
18 And their rims were tall and awesome, and the rims of all four were full of eyes all around.
19 And when the living creatures went, the wheels went beside them; and when the living creatures rose from the earth, the wheels rose.
20 Wherever the spirit wanted to go, they went, and the wheels rose along with them, for the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels.
21 When those went, these went; and when those stood, these stood; and when those rose from the earth, the wheels rose along with them, for the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels.
22 Over the heads of the living creatures there was the likeness of an expanse, shining like awe-inspiring crystal, spread out above their heads.
23 And under the expanse their wings were stretched out straight, one toward another. And each creature had two wings covering its body.
24 And when they went, I heard the sound of their wings like the sound of many waters, like the sound of the Almighty, a sound of tumult like the sound of an army. When they stood still, they let down their wings.
25 And there came a voice from above the expanse over their heads. When they stood still, they let down their wings.
26 And above the expanse over their heads there was the likeness of a throne, in appearance like sapphire; and seated above the likeness of a throne was a likeness with a human appearance.
27 And upward from what had the appearance of his waist I saw as it were gleaming metal, like the appearance of fire enclosed all around. And downward from what had the appearance of his waist I saw as it were the appearance of fire, and there was brightness around him.
28 Like the appearance of the bow that is in the cloud on the day of rain, so was the appearance of the brightness all around. Such was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the LORD. And when I saw it, I fell on my face, and I heard the voice of one speaking.
Chapter 2
1 And he said to me, "Son of man, stand on your feet, and I will speak with you."
2 And as he spoke to me, the Spirit entered into me and set me on my feet, and I heard him speaking to me.
3 And he said to me, "Son of man, I send you to the people of Israel, to nations of rebels, who have rebelled against me. They and their fathers have transgressed against me to this very day.
4 The descendants also are impudent and stubborn: I send you to them, and you shall say to them, 'Thus says the Lord GOD.'
5 And whether they hear or refuse to hear (for they are a rebellious house) they will know that a prophet has been among them.
6 And you, son of man, be not afraid of them, nor be afraid of their words, though briers and thorns are with you and you sit on scorpions. Be not afraid of their words, nor be dismayed at their looks, for they are a rebellious house.
7 And you shall speak my words to them, whether they hear or refuse to hear, for they are a rebellious house.
8 "But you, son of man, hear what I say to you. Be not rebellious like that rebellious house; open your mouth and eat what I give you."
9 And when I looked, behold, a hand was stretched out to me, and behold, a scroll of a book was in it.
10 And he spread it before me. And it had writing on the front and on the back, and there were written on it words of lamentation and mourning and woe.
Chapter 3
1 And he said to me, "Son of man, eat whatever you find here. Eat this scroll, and go, speak to the house of Israel."
2 So I opened my mouth, and he gave me this scroll to eat.
3 And he said to me, "Son of man, feed your belly with this scroll that I give you and fill your stomach with it." Then I ate it, and it was in my mouth as sweet as honey.
4 And he said to me, "Son of man, go to the house of Israel and speak with my words to them.
5 For you are not sent to a people of foreign speech and a hard language, but to the house of Israel--
6 not to many peoples of foreign speech and a hard language, whose words you cannot understand. Surely, if I sent you to such, they would listen to you.
7 But the house of Israel will not be willing to listen to you, for they are not willing to listen to me: because all the house of Israel have a hard forehead and a stubborn heart.
8 Behold, I have made your face as hard as their faces, and your forehead as hard as their foreheads.
9 Like emery harder than flint have I made your forehead. Fear them not, nor be dismayed at their looks, for they are a rebellious house."
10 Moreover, he said to me, "Son of man, all my words that I shall speak to you receive in your heart, and hear with your ears.
11 And go to the exiles, to your people, and speak to them and say to them, 'Thus says the Lord GOD,' whether they hear or refuse to hear."
12 Then the Spirit lifted me up, and I heard behind me the voice of a great earthquake: "Blessed be the glory of the LORD from its place!"
13 It was the sound of the wings of the living creatures as they touched one another, and the sound of the wheels beside them, and the sound of a great earthquake.
14 The Spirit lifted me up and took me away, and I went in bitterness in the heat of my spirit, the hand of the LORD being strong upon me.
15 And I came to the exiles at Tel-abib, who were dwelling by the Chebar canal, and I sat where they were dwelling. And I sat there overwhelmed among them seven days.
16 And at the end of seven days, the word of the LORD came to me:
17 "Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel. Whenever you hear a word from my mouth, you shall give them warning from me.
18 If I say to the wicked, 'You shall surely die,' and you give him no warning, nor speak to warn the wicked from his wicked way, in order to save his life, that wicked person shall die for his iniquity, but his blood I will require at your hand.
19 But if you warn the wicked, and he does not turn from his wickedness, or from his wicked way, he shall die for his iniquity, but you will have delivered your soul.
20 Again, if a righteous person turns from his righteousness and commits injustice, and I lay a stumbling block before him, he shall die. Because you have not warned him, he shall die for his sin, and his righteous deeds that he has done shall not be remembered, but his blood I will require at your hand.
21 But if you warn the righteous person not to sin, and he does not sin, he shall surely live, because he took warning, and you will have delivered your soul."
22 And the hand of the LORD was upon me there. And he said to me, "Arise, go out into the valley, and there I will speak with you."
23 So I arose and went out into the valley, and behold, the glory of the LORD stood there, like the glory that I had seen by the Chebar canal, and I fell on my face.
24 But the Spirit entered into me and set me on my feet, and he spoke with me and said to me, "Go, shut yourself within your house.
25 And you, O son of man, behold, cords will be placed upon you, and you shall be bound with them, so that you cannot go out among the people.
26 And I will make your tongue cling to the roof of your mouth, so that you shall be mute and unable to reprove them, for they are a rebellious house.
27 But when I speak with you, I will open your mouth, and you shall say to them, 'Thus says the Lord GOD.' He who will hear, let him hear; and he who will refuse to hear, let him refuse, for they are a rebellious house.
Chapter 4
1 "And you, son of man, take a brick and lay it before you, and engrave on it a city, even Jerusalem.
2 And put siegeworks against it, and build a siege wall against it, and cast up a mound against it. Set camps also against it, and plant battering rams against it all around.
3 And you, take an iron griddle, and place it as an iron wall between you and the city; and set your face toward it, and let it be in a state of siege, and press the siege against it. This is a sign for the house of Israel.
4 "Then lie on your left side, and place the punishment of the house of Israel upon it. For the number of the days that you lie on it, you shall bear their punishment.
5 For I assign to you a number of days, 390 days, equal to the number of the years of their punishment. So long shall you bear the punishment of the house of Israel.
6 And when you have completed these, you shall lie down a second time, but on your right side, and bear the punishment of the house of Judah. Forty days I assign you, a day for each year.
7 And you shall set your face toward the siege of Jerusalem, with your arm bared, and you shall prophesy against the city.
8 And behold, I will place cords upon you, so that you cannot turn from one side to the other, till you have completed the days of your siege.
9 "And you, take wheat and barley, beans and lentils, millet and emmer, and put them into a single vessel and make your bread from them. During the number of days that you lie on your side, 390 days, you shall eat it.
10 And your food that you eat shall be by weight, twenty shekels a day; from day to day you shall eat it.
11 And water you shall drink by measure, the sixth part of a hin; from day to day you shall drink.
12 And you shall eat it as a barley cake, baking it in their sight on human dung."
13 And the LORD said, "Thus shall the people of Israel eat their bread unclean, among the nations where I will drive them."
14 Then I said, "Ah, Lord GOD! Behold, I have never defiled myself. From my youth up till now I have never eaten what died of itself or was torn by beasts, nor has tainted meat come into my mouth."
15 Then he said to me, "See, I assign to you cow's dung instead of human dung, on which you may prepare your bread."
16 Moreover, he said to me, "Son of man, behold, I will break the supply of bread in Jerusalem. They shall eat bread by weight and with anxiety, and they shall drink water by measure and in dismay.
17 I will do this that they may lack bread and water, and look at one another in dismay, and rot away because of their punishment.
Chapter 5
1 "And you, O son of man, take a sharp sword. Use it as a barber's razor and pass it over your head and your beard. Then take balances for weighing and divide the hair.
2 A third part you shall burn in the fire in the midst of the city, when the days of the siege are completed. And a third part you shall take and strike with the sword all around the city. And a third part you shall scatter to the wind, and I will unsheathe the sword after them.
3 And you shall take from these a small number and bind them in the skirts of your robe.
4 And of these again you shall take some and cast them into the midst of the fire and burn them in the fire. From there a fire will come out into all the house of Israel.
5 "Thus says the Lord GOD: This is Jerusalem. I have set her in the center of the nations, with countries all around her.
6 And she has rebelled against my rules by doing wickedness more than the nations, and against my statutes more than the countries all around her; for they have rejected my rules and have not walked in my statutes.
7 Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: Because you are more turbulent than the nations that are all around you, and have not walked in my statutes or obeyed my rules, and have not even acted according to the rules of the nations that are all around you,
8 therefore thus says the Lord GOD: Behold, I, even I, am against you. And I will execute judgments in your midst in the sight of the nations.
9 And because of all your abominations I will do with you what I have never yet done, and the like of which I will never do again.
10 Therefore fathers shall eat their sons in your midst, and sons shall eat their fathers. And I will execute judgments on you, and any of you who survive I will scatter to all the winds.
11 Therefore, as I live, declares the Lord GOD, surely, because you have defiled my sanctuary with all your detestable things and with all your abominations, therefore I will withdraw. My eye will not spare, and I will have no pity.
12 A third part of you shall die of pestilence and be consumed with famine in your midst; a third part shall fall by the sword all around you; and a third part I will scatter to all the winds and will unsheathe the sword after them.
13 "Thus shall my anger spend itself, and I will vent my fury upon them and satisfy myself. And they shall know that I am the LORD--that I have spoken in my jealousy--when I spend my fury upon them.
14 Moreover, I will make you a desolation and an object of reproach among the nations all around you and in the sight of all who pass by.
15 You shall be a reproach and a taunt, a warning and a horror, to the nations all around you, when I execute judgments on you in anger and fury, and with furious rebukes--I am the LORD; I have spoken--
16 when I send against you the deadly arrows of famine, arrows for destruction, which I will send to destroy you, and when I bring more and more famine upon you and break your supply of bread.
17 I will send famine and wild beasts against you, and they will rob you of your children. Pestilence and blood shall pass through you, and I will bring the sword upon you. I am the LORD; I have spoken."
Chapter 6
1 The word of the LORD came to me:
2 "Son of man, set your face toward the mountains of Israel, and prophesy against them,
3 and say, You mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Lord GOD! Thus says the Lord GOD to the mountains and the hills, to the ravines and the valleys: Behold, I, even I, will bring a sword upon you, and I will destroy your high places.
4 Your altars shall become desolate, and your incense altars shall be broken, and I will cast down your slain before your idols.
5 And I will lay the dead bodies of the people of Israel before their idols, and I will scatter your bones around your altars.
6 Wherever you dwell, the cities shall be waste and the high places ruined, so that your altars will be waste and ruined, your idols broken and destroyed, your incense altars cut down, and your works wiped out.
7 And the slain shall fall in your midst, and you shall know that I am the LORD.
8 "Yet I will leave some of you alive. When you have among the nations some who escape the sword, and when you are scattered through the countries,
9 then those of you who escape will remember me among the nations where they are carried captive, how I have been broken over their whoring heart that has departed from me and over their eyes that go whoring after their idols. And they will be loathsome in their own sight for the evils that they have committed, for all their abominations.
10 And they shall know that I am the LORD. I have not said in vain that I would do this evil to them."
11 Thus says the Lord GOD: "Clap your hands and stamp your foot and say, Alas, because of all the evil abominations of the house of Israel, for they shall fall by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence.
12 He who is far off shall die of pestilence, and he who is near shall fall by the sword, and he who is left and is preserved shall die of famine. Thus I will spend my fury upon them.
13 And you shall know that I am the LORD, when their slain lie among their idols around their altars, on every high hill, on all the mountaintops, under every green tree, and under every leafy oak, wherever they offered pleasing aroma to all their idols.
14 And I will stretch out my hand against them and make the land desolate and waste, in all their dwelling places, from the wilderness to Riblah. Then they will know that I am the LORD."
