예레미아 25-28
제25장
1 유다의 왕 요시야의 아들 여호야김 넷째 해 곧 바벨론의 왕 느부갓네살 원년에 유다의 모든 백성에 관한 말씀이 예레미야에게 임하니라
2 선지자 예레미야가 유다의 모든 백성과 예루살렘의 모든 주민에게 말하여 이르되
3 유다의 왕 아몬의 아들 요시야 왕 열셋째 해부터 오늘까지 이십삼 년 동안 여호와의 말씀이 내게 임하기로 내가 너희에게 꾸준히 일렀으나 너희가 순종하지 아니하였느니라
4 그러므로 여호와께서 그의 모든 종 선지자를 너희에게 끊임없이 보내셨으나 너희가 순종하지 아니하였으며 귀를 기울여 듣지도 아니하였도다
5 그가 이르시기를 너희는 각자의 악한 길과 악행을 버리고 돌아오라 그리하면 나 여호와가 너희와 너희 조상들에게 영원부터 영원까지 준 그 땅에 살리라
6 너희는 다른 신을 따라다니며 섬기거나 경배하지 말며 너희 손으로 만든 것으로써 나의 노여움을 일으키지 말라 그리하면 내가 너희를 해하지 아니하리라 하였으나
7 너희가 내 말을 순종하지 아니하고 너희 손으로 만든 것으로써 나의 노여움을 일으켜 스스로 해하였느니라 여호와의 말씀이니라
8 그러므로 만군의 여호와께서 이와 같이 말씀하시니라 너희가 내 말을 듣지 아니하였느니라
9 보라 내가 북쪽 모든 종족과 내 종 바벨론의 왕 느부갓네살을 불러다가 이 땅과 그 주민과 사방 모든 나라를 쳐서 진멸하여 그들을 놀램과 비웃음 거리가 되게 하며 땅으로 영원한 폐허가 되게 할 것이라 여호와의 말씀이니라
10 내가 그들 중에서 기뻐하는 소리와 즐거워하는 소리와 신랑의 소리와 신부의 소리와 맷돌 소리와 등불 빛이 끊어지게 하리니
11 이 모든 땅이 폐허가 되어 놀랄 일이 될 것이며 이 민족들은 칠십 년 동안 바벨론의 왕을 섬기리라
12 여호와의 말씀이니라 칠십 년이 끝나면 내가 바벨론의 왕과 그의 나라와 갈대아인의 땅을 그 죄악으로 말미암아 벌하여 영원히 폐허가 되게 하되
13 내가 그 땅을 향하여 선언한 바 곧 예레미야가 모든 민족을 향하여 예언하고 이 책에 기록한 나의 모든 말을 그 땅에 임하게 하리라
14 그리하여 여러 민족과 큰 왕들이 그들로 자기들을 섬기게 할 것이나 나는 그들의 행위와 그들의 손이 행한 대로 갚으리라
15 이스라엘의 하나님 여호와께서 이같이 내게 이르시되 너는 내 손에서 이 진노의 술잔을 받아가지고 내가 너를 보내는 바 그 모든 나라로 하여금 마시게 하라
16 그들이 마시고 비틀거리며 미친 듯이 행동하리니 이는 내가 그들 중에 칼을 보냈기 때문이니라 하시기로
17 내가 여호와의 손에서 그 잔을 받아서 여호와께서 나를 보내신 바 그 모든 나라로 마시게 하되
18 예루살렘과 유다 성읍들과 그 왕들과 그 고관들로 마시게 하였더니 그들이 멸망과 놀램과 비웃음과 저주를 당함이 오늘과 같으니라
19 또 애굽의 왕 바로와 그의 신하들과 그의 고관들과 그의 모든 백성과
20 모든 섞여 사는 민족들과 우스 땅의 모든 왕과 블레셋 사람의 땅 모든 왕과 아스글론과 가사와 에그론과 아스돗의 나머지 사람들과
21 에돔과 모압과 암몬 자손과
22 두로의 모든 왕과 시돈의 모든 왕과 바다 건너쪽 섬의 왕들과
23 드단과 데마와 부스와 살쩍을 깎은 모든 자와
24 아라비아의 모든 왕과 광야에서 섞여 사는 민족들의 모든 왕과
25 시므리의 모든 왕과 엘람의 모든 왕과 메대의 모든 왕과
26 북쪽 원근의 모든 왕과 지면에 있는 세상의 모든 나라로 마시게 하니라 세삭 왕은 그 후에 마시리라
27 너는 그들에게 이르기를 만군의 여호와 이스라엘의 하나님의 말씀에 너희는 내가 너희 가운데 보내는 칼 앞에서 마시며 취하여 토하고 엎드러져 다시는 일어나지 말아라 하셨느니라
28 그들이 만일 네 손에서 잔을 받아 마시기를 거절하거든 너는 그들에게 이르기를 만군의 여호와께서 말씀하시기를 너희가 반드시 마셔야 하리라
29 보라 내가 내 이름으로 일컬음을 받는 성에서부터 재앙 내리기를 시작하였은즉 너희가 어찌 능히 형벌을 면할 수 있느냐 면하지 못하리니 이는 내가 칼을 불러 세상의 모든 주민을 칠 것임이라 하셨다 하라 만군의 여호와의 말씀이니라
30 그러므로 너는 그들에게 이 모든 말로 예언하여 이르기를 여호와께서 높은 데서 포효하시고 그의 거룩한 처소에서 소리를 내시며 그의 초장을 향하여 크게 부르시고 세상 모든 주민에 대하여 포도 밟는 자 같이 흥겹게 노래하시리라
31 요란한 소리가 땅 끝까지 이름은 여호와께서 뭇 민족과 다투시며 모든 육체를 심판하시며 악인을 칼에 내어 주셨음이라 여호와의 말씀이니라
32 만군의 여호와께서 이와 같이 말씀하시니라 보라 재앙이 나서 나라에서 나라에 미칠 것이며 큰 바람이 땅 끝에서 일어날 것이라
33 그 날에 여호와에게 죽임을 당한 자가 땅 이 끝에서 땅 저 끝에 미칠 것이나 그들을 위하여 애곡하는 자도 없고 시신을 거두어 주는 자도 없고 매장하여 주는 자도 없으리니 그들은 지면에서 분토가 되리로다
34 너희 목자들아 외쳐 애곡하라 너희 양 떼의 인도자들아 잿더미에서 뒹굴라 이는 너희가 도살 당할 날과 흩음을 당할 기한이 찼음인즉 너희가 귀한 그릇이 떨어짐 같이 될 것이라
35 목자들은 도망할 수 없겠고 양 떼의 인도자들은 도주할 수 없으리로다
36 목자들이 부르짖는 소리와 양 떼의 인도자들이 애곡하는 소리여 여호와가 그들의 초장을 황폐하게 함이로다
37 평화로운 목장들이 여호와의 진노하시는 열기 앞에서 적막하게 되리라
38 그가 젊은 사자 같이 그 굴에서 나오셨으니 그 호통치시는 분의 분노와 그의 극렬한 진노로 말미암아 그들의 땅이 폐허가 되리로다 하시니라
제26장
1 유다의 왕 요시야의 아들 여호야김이 다스리기 시작한 때에 여호와께로부터 이 말씀이 임하여 이르시되
2 여호와께서 이와 같이 말씀하시니라 너는 여호와의 성전 뜰에 서서 유다 모든 성읍에서 여호와의 성전에 와서 예배하는 자에게 내가 네게 명령하여 이르게 한 모든 말을 전하되 한 마디도 감하지 말라
3 그들이 듣고 혹시 각각 그 악한 길에서 돌아오리라 그리하면 내가 그들의 악행으로 말미암아 그들에게 재앙을 내리려 하던 뜻을 돌이키리라
4 너는 그들에게 이와 같이 이르라 여호와의 말씀에 너희가 나를 순종하지 아니하며 내가 너희 앞에 둔 내 율법을 행하지 아니하며
5 내가 너희에게 나의 종 선지자들을 꾸준히 보내 그들의 말을 순종하라고 하였으나 너희는 순종하지 아니하였느니라
6 내가 이 성전을 실로 같이 되게 하고 이 성을 세계 모든 민족의 저줏거리가 되게 하리라 하셨느니라
7 예레미야가 여호와의 성전에서 이 말을 하매 제사장들과 선지자들과 모든 백성이 듣더라
8 예레미야가 여호와께서 명령하신 말씀을 모든 백성에게 전하기를 마치매 제사장들과 선지자들과 모든 백성이 그를 붙잡고 이르되 네가 반드시 죽어야 하리라
9 어찌하여 네가 여호와의 이름을 의지하고 예언하여 이르기를 이 성전이 실로 같이 되겠고 이 성이 황폐하여 주민이 없으리라 하느냐 하며 그 모든 백성이 여호와의 성전에서 예레미야를 향하여 모여드니라
10 유다의 고관들이 이 말을 듣고 왕궁에서 여호와의 성전으로 올라가 여호와의 성전 새 대문의 입구에 앉으매
11 제사장들과 선지자들이 고관들과 모든 백성에게 말하여 이르되 이 사람은 죽는 것이 합당하니 너희 귀로 들음 같이 이 성에 관하여 예언하였음이라
12 예레미야가 모든 고관과 백성에게 말하여 이르되 여호와께서 나를 보내사 너희가 들은 바 모든 말로 이 성전과 이 성을 향하여 예언하게 하셨느니라
13 그런즉 너희는 너희 길과 행위를 고치고 너희 하나님 여호와의 목소리를 청종하라 그리하면 여호와께서 너희에게 선언하신 재앙에 대하여 뜻을 돌이키시리라
14 보라 나는 너희 손에 있으니 너희 의견에 좋은 대로, 옳은 대로 하려니와
15 너희는 분명히 알아라 너희가 나를 죽이면 반드시 무죄한 피를 너희 몸과 이 성과 이 성 주민에게 돌리는 것이니라 이는 여호와께서 진실로 나를 보내사 이 모든 말을 너희 귀에 말하게 하셨음이라
16 고관들과 모든 백성이 제사장들과 선지자들에게 이르되 이 사람이 우리 하나님 여호와의 이름으로 우리에게 말하였으니 죽일 만한 이유가 없느니라
17 그러자 그 지방의 장로 중 몇 사람이 일어나 백성의 온 회중에게 말하여 이르기를
18 유다의 왕 히스기야 시대에 모레셋 사람 미가가 유다의 모든 백성에게 예언하여 이르되 만군의 여호와께서 이와 같이 말씀하셨느니라 시온은 밭 같이 경작지가 될 것이며 예루살렘은 돌 무더기가 되며 이 성전의 산은 산당의 숲과 같이 되리라 하였으나
19 유다의 왕 히스기야와 모든 유다가 그를 죽였느냐 히스기야가 여호와를 두려워하여 여호와께 간구하매 여호와께서 그들에게 선언한 재앙에 대하여 뜻을 돌이키지 아니하셨느냐 우리가 이같이 하면 우리의 생명을 스스로 심히 해롭게 하는 것이니라
20 또 여호와의 이름으로 예언한 사람이 있었는데 곧 기럇여아림 스마야의 아들 우리야라 그가 예레미야의 모든 말과 같이 이 성과 이 땅에 경고하여 예언하매
21 여호야김 왕과 그의 모든 용사와 모든 고관이 그의 말을 듣고서 왕이 그를 죽이려 하매 우리야가 그 말을 듣고 두려워 애굽으로 도망하여 간지라
22 여호야김 왕이 사람을 애굽으로 보내되 곧 악볼의 아들 엘라단과 몇 사람을 함께 애굽으로 보냈더니
23 그들이 우리야를 애굽에서 연행하여 여호야김 왕에게로 그를 데려오매 왕이 칼로 그를 죽이고 그의 시체를 평민의 묘지에 던지게 하니라
24 사반의 아들 아히감의 손이 예레미야를 도와 주어 그를 백성의 손에 내어 주지 아니하여 죽이지 못하게 하니라
제27장
1 유다의 왕 요시야의 아들 여호야김이 다스리기 시작할 때에 여호와께서 말씀으로 예레미야에게 임하시니라
2 여호와께서 이와 같이 내게 말씀하시되 너는 줄과 멍에를 만들어 네 목에 걸고
3 유다의 왕 시드기야를 보러 예루살렘에 온 사신들의 손에도 그것을 주어 에돔의 왕과 모압의 왕과 암몬 자손의 왕과 두로의 왕과 시돈의 왕에게 보내며
4 그들에게 명령하여 그들의 주에게 말하게 하기를 만군의 여호와 이스라엘의 하나님께서 이와 같이 말씀하시되 너희는 너희의 주에게 이같이 전하라
5 나는 내 큰 능력과 나의 쳐든 팔로 땅과 지상에 있는 사람과 짐승들을 만들고 내가 보기에 옳은 사람에게 그것을 주었노라
6 이제 내가 이 모든 땅을 내 종 바벨론의 왕 느부갓네살의 손에 주고 또 들짐승들을 그에게 주어서 섬기게 하였나니
7 모든 나라가 그와 그의 아들과 손자를 그 땅의 기한이 이르기까지 섬기리라 또한 많은 나라들과 큰 왕들이 그 자신을 섬기리라
8 여호와의 말씀이니라 바벨론의 왕 느부갓네살을 섬기지 아니하며 그 목으로 바벨론의 왕의 멍에를 메지 아니하는 백성과 나라는 내가 그들이 멸망하기까지 칼과 기근과 전염병으로 그 민족을 벌하리라
9 너희는 너희 선지자나 복술가나 꿈꾸는 자나 술사나 요술자가 이르기를 너희가 바벨론의 왕을 섬기게 되지 아니하리라 하여도 너희는 듣지 말라
10 그들은 너희에게 거짓을 예언하여 너희가 너희 땅에서 멀리 떠나게 하며 또 내가 너희를 몰아내게 하며 너희를 멸망하게 하느니라
11 그러나 그 목으로 바벨론의 왕의 멍에를 메고 그를 섬기는 나라는 내가 그들을 그 땅에 머물러 밭을 갈며 거기서 살게 하리라 하셨다 하라 여호와의 말씀이니라 하시니라
12 내가 이 모든 말씀대로 유다의 왕 시드기야에게 전하여 이르되 왕과 백성은 바벨론 왕의 멍에를 목에 메고 그와 그의 백성을 섬기소서 그리하면 사시리라
13 어찌하여 당신과 당신의 백성이 여호와께서 바벨론의 왕을 섬기지 아니하는 나라에 대하여 하신 말씀과 같이 칼과 기근과 전염병에 죽으려 하나이까
14 그러므로 당신들은 바벨론의 왕을 섬기게 되지 아니하리라 하는 선지자의 말을 듣지 마소서 그들은 거짓을 예언함이니이다
15 이는 여호와의 말씀이니라 내가 그들을 보내지 아니하였거늘 그들이 내 이름으로 거짓을 예언하니 내가 너희를 몰아내리니 너희와 너희에게 예언하는 선지자들이 멸망하리라
16 내가 또 제사장들과 그 모든 백성에게 전하여 이르되 여호와께서 이와 같이 말씀하시기를 보라 여호와의 성전의 기구를 이제 바벨론에서 속히 돌려오리라고 너희에게 예언하는 선지자들의 말을 듣지 말라 이는 그들이 거짓을 예언함이니라 하셨나니
17 너희는 그들의 말을 듣지 말고 바벨론의 왕을 섬기라 그리하면 살리라 어찌하여 이 성을 황무지가 되게 하려느냐
18 만일 그들이 선지자이고 여호와의 말씀을 가지고 있다면 그들이 여호와의 성전에와 유다의 왕의 궁전에와 예루살렘에 남아 있는 기구를 바벨론으로 옮겨가지 못하도록 만군의 여호와께 구하여야 할 것이니라
19 만군의 여호와께서 기둥들과 큰 대야와 받침들과 이 성에 남아 있는 기구에 대하여 이같이 말씀하시나니
20 이것은 바벨론의 왕 느부갓네살이 유다의 왕 여호야김의 아들 여고니야와 유다와 예루살렘 모든 귀인을 예루살렘에서 바벨론으로 사로잡아 옮길 때에 가져가지 아니하였던 것이라
21 만군의 여호와 이스라엘의 하나님께서 여호와의 성전과 유다의 왕의 궁전과 예루살렘에 남아 있는 그 기구에 대하여 이와 같이 말씀하셨느니라
22 그것들이 바벨론으로 옮겨지고 내가 이것을 돌보는 날까지 거기에 있을 것이니라 그 후에 내가 그것을 올려 와 이 곳에 그것들을 되돌려 두리라 여호와의 말씀이니라
제28장
1 그 해 곧 유다 왕 시드기야가 다스리기 시작한 지 사 년 다섯째 달 기브온앗술의 아들 선지자 하나냐가 여호와의 성전에서 제사장들과 모든 백성이 보는 앞에서 내게 말하여 이르되
2 만군의 여호와 이스라엘의 하나님이 이같이 일러 말씀하시기를 내가 바벨론의 왕의 멍에를 꺾었느니라
3 내가 바벨론의 왕 느부갓네살이 이 곳에서 빼앗아 바벨론으로 옮겨 간 여호와의 성전 모든 기구를 이 년 안에 다시 이 곳으로 되돌려 오리라
4 내가 또 유다의 왕 여호야김의 아들 여고니야와 바벨론으로 간 유다 모든 포로를 다시 이 곳으로 돌아오게 하리니 이는 내가 바벨론의 왕의 멍에를 꺾을 것임이라 여호와의 말씀이니라 하시니라
5 선지자 예레미야가 여호와의 성전에 서 있는 제사장들과 모든 백성들이 보는 앞에서 선지자 하나냐에게 말하니라
6 선지자 예레미야가 말하니라 아멘, 여호와는 이같이 하옵소서 여호와께서 네가 예언한 말대로 이루사 여호와의 성전 기구와 모든 포로를 바벨론에서 이 곳으로 되돌려 오시기를 원하노라
7 그러나 너는 내가 네 귀와 모든 백성의 귀에 이르는 이 말을 잘 들으라
8 나와 너 이전의 선지자들이 예로부터 많은 땅들과 큰 나라들에 대하여 전쟁과 재앙과 전염병을 예언하였느니라
9 평화를 예언하는 선지자는 그 예언자의 말이 응한 후에야 그가 진실로 여호와께서 보내신 선지자로 인정 받게 되리라
10 선지자 하나냐가 선지자 예레미야의 목에서 멍에를 빼앗아 꺾고
11 모든 백성 앞에서 하나냐가 말하여 이르되 여호와께서 이와 같이 말씀하시니라 내가 이 년 안에 모든 민족의 목에서 바벨론의 왕 느부갓네살의 멍에를 이와 같이 꺾어 버리리라 하셨느니라 하매 선지자 예레미야가 자기의 길을 가니라
12 선지자 하나냐가 선지자 예레미야의 목에서 멍에를 꺾어 버린 후에 여호와의 말씀이 예레미야에게 임하니라 이르시기를
13 너는 가서 하나냐에게 말하여 이르기를 여호와의 말씀에 네가 나무 멍에들을 꺾었으나 그 대신 쇠 멍에들을 만들었느니라
14 만군의 여호와 이스라엘의 하나님께서 이와 같이 말씀하시니라 내가 쇠 멍에로 이 모든 나라의 목에 메워 바벨론의 왕 느부갓네살을 섬기게 하였으니 그들이 그를 섬기리라 내가 들짐승도 그에게 주었느니라 하라
15 선지자 예레미야가 선지자 하나냐에게 이르되 하나냐여 들으라 여호와께서 너를 보내지 아니하셨거늘 네가 이 백성에게 거짓을 믿게 하는도다
16 그러므로 여호와께서 이와 같이 말씀하시되 내가 너를 지면에서 제하리니 네가 여호와께 패역한 말을 하였음이라 네가 금년에 죽으리라 하셨느니라 하더니
17 선지자 하나냐가 그 해 일곱째 달에 죽었더라
Jeremiah 25-28
Chapter 25
1 The word that came to Jeremiah concerning all the people of Judah, in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah (that was the first year of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon),
2 which Jeremiah the prophet spoke to all the people of Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem:
3 "For twenty-three years, from the thirteenth year of Josiah the son of Amon, king of Judah, to this day, the word of the LORD has come to me, and I have spoken persistently to you, but you have not listened.
4 You have neither listened nor inclined your ears to hear, although the LORD persistently sent to you all his servants the prophets,
5 saying, 'Turn now, every one of you, from his evil way and evil deeds, and dwell upon the land that the LORD has given to you and your fathers from of old and forever.
6 Do not go after other gods to serve and worship them, or provoke me to anger with the work of your hands. Then I will do you no harm.'
7 Yet you have not listened to me, declares the LORD, that you might provoke me to anger with the work of your hands to your own harm.
8 "Therefore thus says the LORD of hosts: Because you have not obeyed my words,
9 behold, I will send for all the tribes of the north, declares the LORD, and for Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, my servant, and I will bring them against this land and its inhabitants, and against all these surrounding nations. I will devote them to destruction, and make them a horror, a hissing, and an everlasting desolation.
10 Moreover, I will banish from them the voice of mirth and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride, the grinding of the millstones and the light of the lamp.
11 This whole land shall become a ruin and a waste, and these nations shall serve the king of Babylon seventy years.
12 Then after seventy years are completed, I will punish the king of Babylon and that nation, the land of the Chaldeans, for their iniquity, declares the LORD, making the land an everlasting waste.
13 I will bring upon that land all the words that I have uttered against it, everything written in this book, which Jeremiah prophesied against all the nations.
14 For many nations and great kings shall make slaves even of them, and I will recompense them according to their deeds and the work of their hands."
15 Thus the LORD, the God of Israel, said to me: "Take from my hand this cup of the wine of wrath, and make all the nations to whom I send you drink it.
16 They shall drink and stagger and be crazed because of the sword that I am sending among them."
17 So I took the cup from the LORD's hand, and made all the nations to whom the LORD sent me drink it:
18 Jerusalem and the cities of Judah, its kings and officials, to make them a desolation and a waste, a hissing and a curse, as at this day;
19 Pharaoh king of Egypt, his servants, his officials, all his people,
20 and all the mixed tribes among them; all the kings of the land of Uz and all the kings of the land of the Philistines (Ashkelon, Gaza, Ekron, and the remnant of Ashdod);
21 Edom, Moab, and the sons of Ammon;
22 all the kings of Tyre, all the kings of Sidon, and the kings of the coastland across the sea;
23 Dedan, Tema, Buz, and all who cut the corners of their hair;
24 all the kings of Arabia and all the kings of the mixed tribes who dwell in the desert;
25 all the kings of Zimri, all the kings of Elam, and all the kings of Media;
26 all the kings of the north, far and near, one after another, and all the kingdoms of the world that are on the face of the earth. And after them the king of Babylon shall drink.
27 "Then you shall say to them, 'Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Drink, be drunk and vomit, fall and rise no more, because of the sword that I am sending among you.'
28 "And if they refuse to accept the cup from your hand to drink, then you shall say to them, 'Thus says the LORD of hosts: You must drink!
29 For behold, I begin to work disaster at the city that is called by my name, and shall you go unpunished? You shall not go unpunished, for I am summoning a sword against all the inhabitants of the earth, declares the LORD of hosts.'
30 "You, therefore, shall prophesy against them all these words, and say to them: "'The LORD will roar from on high, and from his holy habitation utter his voice; he will roar mightily against his fold, and shout, like those who tread grapes, against all the inhabitants of the earth.
31 The clamor will resound to the ends of the earth, for the LORD has an indictment against the nations; he is entering into judgment with all flesh, and the wicked he will put to the sword, declares the LORD.'
32 "Thus says the LORD of hosts: Behold, disaster is going forth from nation to nation, and a great tempest is stirring from the farthest parts of the earth!
33 "And those pierced by the LORD on that day shall extend from one end of the earth to the other. They shall not be lamented, or gathered, or buried; they shall be dung on the surface of the ground.
34 "Wail, you shepherds, and cry out, and roll in ashes, you lords of the flock, for the days of your slaughter and dispersion have come, and you shall fall like a choice vessel.
35 No refuge will remain for the shepherds, nor escape for the lords of the flock.
36 A voice--the cry of the shepherds, and the wail of the lords of the flock! For the LORD is laying waste their pasture,
37 and the peaceful folds are devastated because of the fierce anger of the LORD.
38 Like a lion he has left his lair, for their land has become a waste because of the sword of the oppressor, and because of his fierce anger."
Chapter 26
1 In the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, this word came from the LORD:
2 "Thus says the LORD: Stand in the court of the LORD's house, and speak to all the cities of Judah that come to worship in the house of the LORD all the words that I command you to speak to them; do not hold back a word.
3 It may be they will listen, and every one turn from his evil way, that I may relent of the disaster that I intend to do to them because of their evil deeds.
4 You shall say to them, 'Thus says the LORD: If you will not listen to me, to walk in my law that I have set before you,
5 and to listen to the words of my servants the prophets whom I send to you urgently, though you have not listened,
6 then I will make this house like Shiloh, and I will make this city a curse for all the nations of the earth.'"
7 The priests and the prophets and all the people heard Jeremiah speaking these words in the house of the LORD.
8 And when Jeremiah had finished speaking all that the LORD had commanded him to speak to all the people, then the priests and the prophets and all the people laid hold of him, saying, "You shall die!
9 Why have you prophesied in the name of the LORD, saying, 'This house shall be like Shiloh, and this city shall be desolate, without inhabitant'?" And all the people gathered around Jeremiah in the house of the LORD.
10 When the officials of Judah heard these things, they came up from the king's house to the house of the LORD and took their seat in the entry of the New Gate of the house of the LORD.
11 Then the priests and the prophets said to the officials and to all the people, "This man deserves the sentence of death, because he has prophesied against this city, as you have heard with your own ears."
12 Then Jeremiah spoke to all the officials and all the people, saying, "The LORD sent me to prophesy against this house and this city all the words you have heard.
13 Now therefore mend your ways and your deeds, and obey the voice of the LORD your God, and the LORD will relent of the disaster that he has pronounced against you.
14 But as for me, behold, I am in your hands. Do with me as seems good and right to you.
15 Only know for certain that if you put me to death, you will bring innocent blood upon yourselves and upon this city and its inhabitants, for in truth the LORD sent me to you to speak all these words in your ears."
16 Then the officials and all the people said to the priests and the prophets, "This man does not deserve the sentence of death, for he has spoken to us in the name of the LORD our God."
17 And certain of the elders of the land arose and spoke to all the assembled people, saying,
18 "Micah of Moresheth prophesied in the days of Hezekiah king of Judah, and said to all the people of Judah: 'Thus says the LORD of hosts, "'Zion shall be plowed as a field; Jerusalem shall become a heap of ruins, and the mountain of the house a wooded height.'
19 Did Hezekiah king of Judah and all Judah put him to death? Did he not fear the LORD and entreat the favor of the LORD, and did not the LORD relent of the disaster that he had pronounced against them? But we are about to bring great disaster upon ourselves."
20 There was another man who prophesied in the name of the LORD, Uriah the son of Shemaiah from Kiriath-jearim. He prophesied against this city and against this land in words like those of Jeremiah.
21 And when King Jehoiakim, with all his warriors and all the officials, heard his words, the king sought to put him to death. But when Uriah heard of it, he was afraid and fled and escaped to Egypt.
22 Then King Jehoiakim sent to Egypt certain men, Elnathan the son of Achbor and others with him,
23 and they took Uriah from Egypt and brought him to King Jehoiakim, who struck him down with the sword and dumped his dead body into the burial place of the common people.
24 But the hand of Ahikam the son of Shaphan was with Jeremiah so that he was not given over to the people to be put to death.
Chapter 27
1 In the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah the son of Josiah, king of Judah, this word came to Jeremiah from the LORD.
2 Thus the LORD said to me: "Make yourself straps and yoke-bars, and put them on your neck.
3 Send word to the king of Edom, the king of Moab, the king of the sons of Ammon, the king of Tyre, and the king of Sidon by the hand of the envoys who have come to Jerusalem to Zedekiah king of Judah.
4 Give them this charge for their masters: 'Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: This is what you shall say to your masters:
5 "It is I who by my great power and my outstretched arm have made the earth, with the men and animals that are on the earth, and I give it to whomever it seems right to me.
6 Now I have given all these lands into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, my servant, and I have given him also the beasts of the field to serve him.
7 All the nations shall serve him and his son and his grandson, until the time of his own land comes. Then many nations and great kings shall make him their slave.
8 "'"But if any nation or kingdom will not serve this Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and put its neck under the yoke of the king of Babylon, I will punish that nation with the sword, with famine, and with pestilence, declares the LORD, until I have consumed it by his hand.
9 So do not listen to your prophets, your diviners, your dreamers, your fortune-tellers, or your sorcerers, who are saying to you, 'You shall not serve the king of Babylon.'
10 For it is a lie that they are prophesying to you, with the result that you will be removed far from your land, and I will drive you out, and you will perish.
11 But any nation that will bring its neck under the yoke of the king of Babylon and serve him, I will leave on its own land, to work it and dwell there, declares the LORD."'"
12 To Zedekiah king of Judah I spoke in like manner: "Bring your necks under the yoke of the king of Babylon, and serve him and his people and live.
13 Why will you and your people die by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence, as the LORD has spoken concerning any nation that will not serve the king of Babylon?
14 Do not listen to the words of the prophets who are saying to you, 'You shall not serve the king of Babylon,' for it is a lie that they are prophesying to you.
15 I have not sent them, declares the LORD, but they are prophesying falsely in my name, with the result that I will drive you out and you will perish, you and the prophets who are prophesying to you."
16 Then I spoke to the priests and to all this people, saying, "Thus says the LORD: Do not listen to the words of your prophets who are prophesying to you, saying, 'Behold, the vessels of the LORD's house will now shortly be brought back from Babylon,' for it is a lie that they are prophesying to you.
17 Do not listen to them; serve the king of Babylon and live. Why should this city become a desolation?
18 If they are prophets, and if the word of the LORD is with them, then let them intercede with the LORD of hosts, that the vessels that are left in the house of the LORD, in the house of the king of Judah, and in Jerusalem may not go to Babylon.
19 For thus says the LORD of hosts concerning the pillars, the sea, the stands, and the rest of the vessels that are left in this city,
20 which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon did not take away, when he took into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon Jeconiah the son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, and all the nobles of Judah and Jerusalem--
21 thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, concerning the vessels that are left in the house of the LORD, in the house of the king of Judah, and in Jerusalem:
22 They shall be carried to Babylon and remain there until the day when I visit them, declares the LORD. Then I will bring them back and restore them to this place."
Chapter 28
1 In that same year, at the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah king of Judah, in the fifth month of the fourth year, Hananiah the son of Azzur, the prophet from Gibeon, spoke to me in the house of the LORD, in the presence of the priests and all the people, saying,
2 "Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: I have broken the yoke of the king of Babylon.
3 Within two years I will bring back to this place all the vessels of the LORD's house, which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon took away from this place and carried to Babylon.
4 I will also bring back to this place Jeconiah the son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, and all the exiles from Judah who went to Babylon, declares the LORD, for I will break the yoke of the king of Babylon."
5 Then the prophet Jeremiah spoke to Hananiah the prophet in the presence of the priests and all the people who were standing in the house of the LORD,
6 and the prophet Jeremiah said, "Amen! May the LORD do so; may the LORD make the words that you have prophesied come true, and bring back to this place from Babylon the vessels of the house of the LORD, and all the exiles.
7 Yet hear now this word that I speak in your hearing and in the hearing of all the people.
8 The prophets who preceded you and me from ancient times prophesied war, famine, and pestilence against many countries and great kingdoms.
9 As for the prophet who prophesies peace, when the word of that prophet comes to pass, then it will be known that the LORD has truly sent the prophet."
10 Then the prophet Hananiah took the yoke-bars from the neck of Jeremiah the prophet and broke them.
11 And Hananiah spoke in the presence of all the people, saying, "Thus says the LORD: Even so will I break the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon from the neck of all the nations within two years." But Jeremiah the prophet went his way.
12 Sometime after the prophet Hananiah had broken the yoke-bars from off the neck of Jeremiah the prophet, the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah:
13 "Go, tell Hananiah, 'Thus says the LORD: You have broken wooden bars, but you have made in their place bars of iron.
14 For thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: I have put upon the neck of all these nations an iron yoke to serve Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and they shall serve him, for I have given to him even the beasts of the field.'"
15 And Jeremiah the prophet said to the prophet Hananiah, "Listen, Hananiah, the LORD has not sent you, and you have made this people trust in a lie.
16 Therefore thus says the LORD: 'Behold, I will remove you from the face of the earth. This year you shall die, because you have uttered rebellion against the LORD.'"
17 In that same year, in the seventh month, the prophet Hananiah died.
